I was out for a walk one morning when I heard ravens, crows and magpies making a racket farther off in the woods. As I came upon them a Great Horned Owl flew out of a lodge pole pine with a flock of black right on it’s tail. Such force, such energy!

As I turned to leave I spotted a bobcat about 100 feet in front of me making its way up the hillside... amazing! I often wonder what I don’t see.

A few days later I was out for a walk when again I heard the same racket. This time the owl stayed having learned that its tormentors would leave upon seeing me. I got some beautiful video footage of this Great Horned Owl... no Bobcat this time though.

The idea for this painting came from that rush of black birds swooping out of the trees after the owl. Sometimes night creeps up on day, slowly. Other times it swoops, but it always comes. Night always chases day.
