When I was working for the state this spring I came across this raven in the median early one morning. It was partially decomposed, the sun was just breaking the horizon and traffic already was rushing by. I squatted down to look at it closely, it lay there against the new green grasses the wind ruffling the few feathers it had. I wanted to stay there looking deeply but I had to work so stood up and started picking up trash. We toss an immense amount of trash from our vehicles. Maybe at that particular spot it is the great vastness of space, or maybe we are just disconnected, or maybe we are just wretched cave dwellers at heart. I don't know but seeing this raven lying there... The image stayed with me and finally this early summer I painted the energy of that image floating around my head onto the canvas.
