“coyote dreams the night” 16”x20” Acrylic on canvas $375.00 plus shipping and handling I love “coyote dreams the night”. I had a gallery owner ask me what it meant! If I knew that I would not have painted it. This painting started out as another idea that didn’t get very far before the whole canvas became a dark background, a void. Many of my night time dreams take place in “voids” with just the essential characters, no background.
I have always felt an affinity to coyotes, ravens and foxes. And I really wanted to paint them, out of that came this painting. The questions for me are, what is real? What are we dreaming? Who is doing the dreaming? Who is asleep? Who is awake? I love the idea of coyote howling the stars into the night sky, inquisitive fox whispering into humans ear and wise raven being present, waiting and seeing what is going to happen. I tend to paint in layers, starting with what one might see and ending up with what is really there. I can’t tell you how many layers went into the raven alone until I felt it was right.
This particular painting, like most of my paintings, was painted free hand directly onto the canvas. No studies, no sketches, just ideas flowing out of the brush onto the canvas. The characters are outlined in white which for me adds to being “apart” of the dream.
I love the brilliance of this painting. I added the bottom stripes last, for me there is something about the golden yellow line that brings the whole painting together. And pulls me deeply into what is. This painting is available, if you are interested purchasing it
