"Bear Breathes In" 12"x16" c.2007 M Easton
“Bear Breathes In” 12”x16”, framed SOLD In private collection. Acrylic on canvas, 3/4" stretcher After spending a month in central and northern New Mexico, visiting galleries, artist friends and just drinking in the vista that is New Mexico, I came back to Colorado high up in the mountains eager to paint.

I love simple lines, suggestions; as I was driving home I went past several herds of buffalo and came up with this simple image of Buffalo in motion. I thought of a bear sleeping, breathing in, how a creature of that size would rumble. With this study I was consciously working with color and design. I did some sketches of my buffalo, then drew directly and lightly on the canvas a basic outline of my idea. From there I did the background, blending in some dark greens to get an earthy feel for the sleeping bear blending into the night sky.

The moon has shown up in a lot of my paintings, having lived off the grid for most of my adult life out in the boonies I have spent many a night walking under the moon. It is an awareness of this universe and the connection of all things. With this study I wanted to get the “feel” of a bear hibernating in a cave and transition to a midnight sky under the waning moon.

I intentionally kept this painting simple, relying on suggestion, letting viewers find their own stories. I paint for the joy of painting, seeing what arises from my imagination and make every attempt to not let my “small self” get in the way.
I see, feel, life in vibrations, I don’t have to understand, I don’t have to know. For me this painting is calm and joyous at the same time. This painting has gone home!
